From Spell Research to Auror
Author: Oreileah McCoi
Date: 04-24-07 17:05
Orei thanked Hermione for her time and kept the pamphlets within her bag. She'd definitely be looking into the spell research field...however, she also wanted to talk to Forest and Ethan who were running the booth with information for Aurors. She'd come up, having had Ethan for a DADA professor and having had a rather large crush on him during that semester, she blushed...but surely she was beyond that...but then again he was very cute.
She looked to Forest, he had just finished answering a question from a Hufflepuff sixth year, and she moved forward...Forest was rather easy on the eyes as well..hmm.
"Hello Forest. Good to see you here at Career day. I've truthfully one question, for both you and Mr. Somerset to answer." She'd offer him a smile, drawing up a couple of informational pamphlets and fliers from atop the table.
She gave a moments pause before asking her question. "Why, did you become an Auror?"
Now, she'd wait for his answer, and Ethan's knowing that he was wrapping up as well with the group of "fangirl former students" that had gathered around him.
Olympia & Arsinoe
Author: Illyria
Date: 04-24-07 19:53
Two of Illyria's sisters were present at the Hogwarts Career Day. Olympia, the second youngest of the Jones daughters, was an obliviator for the Ministry of Magic's Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. She'd started working for the Ministry directly after graduating from Hogwarts, first as a clerk for the department, then as an obliviator-in-training and finally as an obliviator in the fullest sense. She'd been a full-fledged obliviator for nearly two years.
Arsinoe, the eldest Jones girl and the one set to be married this summer, worked as an apothecarist for St. Mungo's Hospital. She'd started out her career at Slug & Jiggers in Diagon Alley, apprenticing under the owner for nearly three years before transferring to St. Mungo's, where she received a few years more study before she became mistress apothecarist. She loved her job and couldn't imagine quitting, even to settle down and start a family.
The two tables were near each other but not directly next to each other, so anytime the sisters wished to speak to one another, either one or the other had to travel a few tables down. Illyria came around to both tables regularly, sometimes bearing snack food and drinks.
"What does it take to become an obliviator?" someone asked Olympia.
"You have to excel at Charms, first and foremost," Olympia answered. "And you'll have to get the proper training before you can become an agent in the field. Obliviators are called upon by many of the Ministry's various departments and committees to clean up a situation, almost always involving Muggles stumbling upon wizarding happenings in some way. So, you'll have to know a little something about Muggles too..."
Someone asked Arsinoe, "Do all apothecaries smell like cabbage?"
She laughed. "Only Slug & Jiggers does. There are air purifying charms that can be used to clear up the foulest smells that come from some of the potions we brew. Actually, some of our ingredients smell fairly terribly in their purest forms." She laughed again. "If working with smelly herbs isn't your idea of a fun time, then perhaps becoming an apothecarist isn't for you."
Illyria smiled, listening in on the conversation. It was her very first Career Day since returning to Hogwarts as Astronomy professor. It's really a shame that they hadn't had career days when she was still a student, though she'd always known that she wanted to become an inventor. She knew in her heart that had the Ministry of Magic not cut funding on her special projects, she'd still be there, inventing to her heart's content.
But she was very happy at Hogwarts. She didn't have any plans of leaving anytime soon.
Indi Makes A Date
Author: Travis
Date: 04-24-07 20:29
Travis has a selection of plants on display at her booth. She picked ones to bring that she didn't think the Hogwarts students would see in their Herbology classes like an orchid that smells like vanilla or another, one that's strictly wizarding, that smells like chocolate fudge. One plant Travis even brought a cutting for a new form of peppermint. This new subspecies has red and white leaves and is excellent in tea. The extract from it is more potent, which means less is needed. The cutting for the new peppermint plant Travis plans on giving to the Hogwarts Herbology professor, Marzipan Fitzroy.
Also at her booth Travis has a variety of teas to give away as well as some of the candles she makes, scented with extracts from plants she grows and dyed with her own plants too. For freebies, Travis has small packets of teas, some of the smaller candles (the ones often called tea candles), and candies all flavored with some of her plants, including some candy flavored with extract from the new pepperment plant. For literature to hand out Travis has brochures with information on a different jobs out there that require knowledge of herbology and with information on a great many of the uses for plants.
Directly across from Travis is her brother's booth. Indigo's booth for McFusty's Pets has combined information on both selling pets and pet health care. At the moment Indigo is talking to two girls Travis has seen in her shop a few times and knows they are seventh years. From where Travis stands it looks as though Indi is flirting as much as he's answering career day questions.
When the girls have finally walked on to another booth, Travis crosses the aisle between Indi's booth and hers. "Manage a date out of that?"
Indi flashes a cheeky grin. "Not for the next Hogsmeade trip, no. She's going to look me up after end of term. You know, when I was still a student here I didn't give Orla a second thought. Now that she's seventeen, I've not only given her a second thought but a third and a fourth."
Travis mock hits Indi on the arm then rolling her eyes at him returns to her booth to speak with a student who's just walked up.
How To Get Into Publishing
Author: Ron Weasley
Date: 04-24-07 21:46
Dennis Creevy looks over the information Ron has for the world of publishing. Picking up a booklet, Ron's got a variety on the various Quidditch teams around the world and one on Quidpot and its current teams, Dennis says, "I never would have pegged you for a career in anything book related."
Ron chuckles. "You and me both though I think Hermione over there is even more shocked. Or maybe it's my mum who is. Those are free. Pick one or two," Ron says in reference to the booklets.
"Do you think you'll stick with this?"
"Unless I get on a pro Quidditch team and even then I'd probably come back to this. I like it a great deal."
"What led you to Whizz Hard Books?" Dennis asks, flipping through another of the booklets.
"I'd been working as a fact checker for a professor at St. Emrys."
"What's a fat checker?" a younger student who's just walked up asks.
"Fact checker," Ron corrects. "It's just what it sounds like. I took information, in this case it was all Quidditch related, and I cross checked that the information was correct. One good example that comes to mind is the information the author gave me to check had the name of a player from 1870 as Ivan Grimsby. The correct name is Ian, not Ivan."
Ron looks to the younger boy to see if the answer satisfies him before finishing the answer to Dennis's question.
"I was working as a fact checker and found I didn't mind doing so much reading when it was pretty much nothing but Quidditch. When one fact checking job ended I found another one that also dealt with Quidditch. That one eventually ended too but I couldn't immediately find another one. Whizz Hard just happened to have a job opening so I applied thinking that it couldn't be all that bad if Whizz Hard mainly deals with Quidditch related books... and I was right. I really like my job."
Ron spends the next ten minutes answering questions from both Dennis and the younger boy, whose name Ron learns is Wilbur Tremaine. When they both move on, someone else Ron knows from his own time here at Hogwarts, Stewart Ackerley, has come up and begun asking Ron questions as well.
Foreign Relations {Draco}
Author: Lucius Malfoy
Date: 04-25-07 17:03
"Do you like living in Geneva?" Fionna Gairden asks.
Draco crinkles his mouth. "Yes and no. Geneva is a great city and working for International Magical Cooperation I meet people from all over. The main drawback is I do miss London and also my family's home in Wiltshire and sometimes I miss Romania. I suppose I could live in London or even Wiltshire but commuting that distance every day would be tiring, even if using the Floo."
Graham Pritchard asks, "Is there anything you really dislike about your job?"
Draco leans closer and lowers his voice. "Just between us," he looks from Fionna to Graham to Malcolm Baddock to Basilia Broomshull there are some days I have to grit my teeth and have a very stiff upper lip when dealing with so many Muggle borns and Muggle lovers. I can't openly express a distaste around just anyone. That could jeapardize whatever foreign relations matters are at hand and could have repurcussions later on."
Basilia nods in understanding. "It's not that I hate Muggle borns per se. They just aren't on par with the rest of us."
"Exactly," Draco affirms.
For the most part Draco has learned since graduating Hogwarts that there are some tolerably decent Muggle borns out there; however, Draco still firmly believes that Muggle borns are not of the same class as pure bloods and Muggles are a decidedly large step further down the ladder. Draco is still learning how to suppress his inborn sense of superiority, especially when working with someone for the first time. Draco is not about to be demoted or fired for ruining a project for his office simply because he couldn't keep a sneer off his face when learning he'd be working with a mudblood or with a pure blood in strong support of Muggles.
A student Draco doesn't know walks up to ask some questions so Draco thanks Basilia, Fionna, Graham and Malcolm for stopping by then goes over to greet the newcomer to the International Magical Cooperation career day booth.
Humbatas Booth
Author: Pyrrhus
Date: 04-25-07 18:59
Pyrrhus puts out more rectangles of parchment for a drawing Viktor and he will be doing at the end of career day. In addition to pamphlets on the British and Irish Quidditch Leageau in general and ones specific to the teams of the league there are trading cards for members of a number of the teams with the majority being of Humbatas players. The parchment slips Py is replenishing are for chances to win a day with the Humbatas this summer. Eight names will be drawn.
Viktor walks up with a group of five students, reminding them, "Don't be forgetting to put your names in the box."
"How did it go?" Py asks.
"Wary vell. I am liking these brooms. Vith Professor Dumbledore's approval I vill order some for the school."
Working in conjunction with Amaryllis Roop at the Comet Trading Company booth, Viktor had been taking groups of five outside at a time to try out a brand new broom constructed with young people between the ages of 11 to 16 in mind. Older and younger alike could utilize the broom as well but it is geared towards that 11 to 16 age group. Py had tried out the broom as well, then had wished he'd had one like it when he was younger. The Asteroid, as this Comet has been dubbed, flies well, has good acceleration, and handles easiliy plus it comes in some different, and interesting colors.
Py's had a good time today even if he has been on his feet a great deal and answering the same questions over and over and over. He loves talking about Quidditch and has even had a number of questions asking after Isolde. Knowing that Py might be asked about her, Viktor has even supplied their booth with brochures about the new little league Isolde is part of. Py had brought pictures of Isolde with her teams logo and colors.
It's not all that long before career day begins winding down. Viktor and Py alternate drawing the eight names for contest. Knowing the drawing was to have taken place at a certain time, many students who'd already left the Great Hall returned to find out who won the Humbatas's drawing as well as who won the drawings at other booths. Py isn't sure about any of the other booths but at this one, a student doesn't have to be present to win.
The announced names are met with applause, squeals and even groans. Winners are Olive Green, Sage Porter, Ronan Eastwick, Griet Vanderbilt, Coco Nutt, Fritz Schnackenpfefferhausen, Alanna Beck, and Bailey Gray.
Popular
Author: Ethan Somerset
Date: 04-25-07 20:01
Like Forest, Ethan couldn't get himself in the mindset to actually want to be at Hogwarts. He was sorry to hear of Terry Patrick's passing and even more sorry to learn that Tonks had gone missing. He hoped that she would be recovered soon and in good health and spirits. In addition to the recent tragedy to strike the auror office, how to approach the Towneleys was on Ethan's mind. As far as he knew, they were Muggles without any wizarding connections whatsoever, so not only would they have to adapt to the fact that their dead son Finn Towneley was actually alive and had been switched at birth with another child, but that this son, Finn, who'd also been known as Silas Emeric and now Ethan Somerset, was actually a wizard.
Ethan couldn't dwell on his thoughts very much, because the auror table turned out to be very popular at the Hogwarts Career Day. Girls and boys alike visited to learn about becoming aurors, though most of the girls looked more starry-eyed than actually interested in the profession. One girl, Oreileah McCoi, addressed both men with a very good question.
Why had Ethan become an auror? At the time, Ethan had done it because he thought it was what he'd wanted. He'd always been a people-person and wanted to help good wizards. He wanted to make sure that the bad guys were put in their rightful place. But in recent years, Ethan had learned that it had actually been his adoptive parents, Dorian and Maren Somerset, who'd pushed him to become an auror. They had wanted their little family to look good while sinister dealings were done behind-the-scenes. They'd been the ones to push him to teach at Hogwarts, not only to have Ethan continue his image as an upstanding individual, but also so that he could begin to carry out work for Lord Voldemort.
Returning to Hogwarts always reminded Ethan first and foremost about how he'd transformed into Voldemort's pawn right there within those walls. But he had many good memories there too and believed he'd make more to come. He'd told Orei that he'd become an auror because he wanted to fight the good fight, and he'd meant every word of it.
There was an unexpected lull in the traffic at the auror table. Forest decided to check the floo conduit again for news at the office, while Ethan chit chatted with some of the other volunteers. Remus Lupin, another former DADA professor at Hogwarts, came over to say hello.
"You and your colleague look a little worn out," Remus observed. "I think your table must be the most popular here." He smiled kindly.
"Yes, that may be accurate," Ethan replied, laughing. "I wish that was all it was. We lost an auror yesterday, and another has gone missing."
Remus frowned. Somehow he'd escaped hearing the news about Tonks.
Ethan, having learned who was involved with the Order of the Phoenix after the raid in Hogsmeade, acknowledged the look on Lupin's face with surprise. "You hadn't heard? Tonks was kidnapped by rebel wizards in Paris yesterday afternoon."
"She's alive, then." Or so Remus hoped.
"We think so," Ethan replied solemnly. "Everything in our power is being done to recover her."
Lupin's expression was a mixture of relief and concern. "I hope you are successful," he said hoarsely. He nodded at Ethan by way of saying goodbye and slowly walked back to his table.
Ethan frowned but quickly turned up the corners of his mouth when two young first years came timidly up to the table to ask about what it took to become an auror.
Feeling Lost
Author: Sage Porter
Date: 04-25-07 20:20
Sage had roamed around the Great Hall feeling a little on the lost side. Sage knows he'd make an excellent chef someday were he to go that route for a career. Problem is, Sage doesn't want to be part of the same professional circle as his father. Even if on good terms with Lohengrin, Sage doesn't think he'd want to do something where everyone would be comparing Sage to Lohengrin. Not being on good terms with his da, Sage also can't help but wonder if Lohengrin himself would try to claim that any success Sage might have is due to him. If Da were to do that he'd expect Sage to bow down and kiss his feet out of deep, undying graditude. Sage is going to content himself with cooking as a hobby and nothing more.
The booth on dragon keeping was really interesting as was the information about animal healing at the McFusty's Pets one. Some of the jobs at Gringotts might be good, like curse breaking, but not ones like accounting. The different law enforcement jobs has a certain appeal. The positions in departments such as the Magical Accidents and Catastrophes could be interesting but others sound like a real snooze.
At the British and Irish Quidditch League booth, Sage could well imagine himself playing professionally. To do that though he knows he'll have to work hard the next two years to get his game to a level for at least a St. Emrys team. Only then can he seriously look at eventually trying to make a pro team. Sage did put his name in for the drawing there.
Gathering with other students back at the Quidditch booth, Sage is pleasantly shocked when his name is one of the ones called for the drawing. That means one day this summer he'll get to find out what it's like out on the pitch with a pro team. Maybe that will help Sage determine if he wants to spend the next two years upping his game enough to make it a career. For now though he's every bit as confused as to what he wants to do with his life beyong Hogwarts.
